Sudan is located in Northern Africa, bordering the Red Sea.

population: about 40.2 million. 4 million people live in the captial, Khartoum. 648,000 Sudanese people live as refugees in other countries.

size: 967,490 square miles, the 10th largest country in the world, and the largest on the continent of Africa.

health: 2.3% of Sudanese are infected with HIV. 41% of Sudanese children suffer from malnutrition, the 6th highest rate in the world. Sudan has the 6th highest number of people infected by Malaria in the world. 30% of Sudanese people do not have access to clean water, and 66% do not have access to sanitation. The average Sudanese person lives 50.28 years.

economy: Sudan's economy is growing at 12.8% a year, the 6th fastest rate in the world, largely due to oil production. Sudan has an unemployment rate of 18.7%, with 40% of the population in poverty. 80% of Sudanese workers are farmers.

culture: 70% of Sudanese are muslims, 25% practice indigenous religions, and 5% are Christians. 39% of the poulation are Arabs, and Arabic is the official language. 38.9% of the Sudanese people are illiterate. 5,355,000 Sudanese people have been displaced from their homes due to violence.
